We know that we have a key role to play in developing our community both within our business, and the wider world in which we operate.
We are proud of the community activities of our employees who have made big contributions, particularly to the communities around our sites. Our ‘Building Our Community’ programme has been running since 2009 and was designed to provide a framework of support that will encourage activity, while giving participants the freedom to choose how they want to take part.
We have set ourselves a wide ranging set of community goals, from supporting fundraising and providing additional time off for community activities, to supporting students, schools and colleges around our sites.
In 2015, our employees:
- donated over £101,000 through fundraising to local communities and charities
- a further £75,000 in Give As You Earn donations
- donated about £65,00 worth of product to various causes
- 111 days leave was granted for employees to carry out community support work.
Our methods of fundraising are varied, and included raffles, car boot sales, long distance walks and bike rides.
Employees all across the business raised money for national fundraising events such as Comic Relief, through cake sales and dress down days. Individual achievements included skydiving for a local hospice, raft racing for a disabled children’s charity, the Ride London 100 miles cycle race and raising money for CLIC Sargent.

In addition to raising money, employees also take time out to help in their local community, such as painting school classrooms or volunteering for FareShare, a charity supported by UB which distributes excess food nationwide. Many of our sites also support their local schools and colleges by offering factory visits and careers advice.
In 2013, we became a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, in particular supporting ex-service personnel seeking employment.
In 2014, we started supporting In Kind Direct (IKD). IKD redistributes surplus goods from manufacturers to UK charities, working both domestically and abroad.
